An Apothecary’s guide to Strep Throat

Eleven years ago, when I had my first child, I embarked on my holistic wellness journey. It didn’t happen overnight; its been a slow evolution of growing and replacing standard over-the-counter medicines to holistic alternatives. My philosophy for wellness is to nourish our bodies with whole foods, herbs, and minerals to keep our body nourished and hydrated into a ideal symbiosis. When our bodies are in this condition, they are able to fight any virus that may come our way with little to no intervention. We need to shift our thinking from ‘a pill for every ill’ and treating symptoms to supporting our body to do what it was made to do. I don’t think we need cough suppressants; we need herbs like mullein or fenugreek to nourish our body and support the respiratory system.

Every year there is the ‘new’ bug that’s hitting people left and right. This season it seems to be a version of strep throat with a case of viral eye infection or in some cases pink eye. All of our circle of friends is pretty like-minded when it comes to wellness and health, but because I’ve been doing this for a lot longer, I’ve got a bigger arsenal.

Recently one of our single guy friends tried ignoring his sore throat, not treating it early, and it turned into a full-blown illness. I heard how poorly he was doing so I bagged up a bundle of my favorite remedies to take to him.

I had the same sore throat about the same time he did and I treated it early and hard and it only lasted 2 day and never turned into anything that slowed me down.

Check out the different medicines I use:

  • Elderberry Syrup - this is so easy to make at home. I’ve been doing it for years! I make it in bulk, and freeze it before I’ve added the honey. Defrost, add honey and you’ve got fresh elderberry syrup when needed. One of the most well-studied benefits of elderberry syrup are its powerful immune-boosting properties. Elderberry syrup may reduce the duration and severity of symptoms related to colds, flu, and influenza. It also is an anti cancer agent, helps with seasonal allergies, and sinus infections. See my Amazon Storefront for all the ingredients.

  • Bio available Vitamin C - what is bioavailability? Bioavailability is the extent to which nutrients can be absorbed and utilized by the body. So when looking for a bioavailable vitamin c, we want to look for the source of the vitamin c coming from a whole food source. Something like Amla Fruit or Acerola Cherry and not a chemically processed and manufactured form. This brand is the most superior vitamin c I’ve ever taken and you can actually notice a difference. Get my favorite Vitamin C here.

  • Belladonna - this is a great first remedy to try if you are new to the homeopathy world. This remedy assists with eye complaints, inflammation, red, burning, itching, goopy. For sore throat, tonsillitis, laryngitis, cough, fever, and headache. The best part of using these homeopathic remedes, they are super innexpensive. You can grab yours here.

  • Colloidal silver - people have noticed that what they think is pink eye popping up during their illness or shortly after. Most cases it’s just apart of the virus. But if in fact it is conjunctivitis, I like to use this for an antibiotic. It should be used sparingly and only for serious situations. It is an antibiotic, so it kills everything, even the good. But it’s natural and very effective. 1-2 drops to each infected eye 2x a day. Here is the brand I love.

  • Earthly Immune B iotic - this is my top three favorite item Earthley sells. Herbal tinctures are some of my favorite ways to treat for overall full body wellness and when we are down with a bug. ‘Immune Biotic is formulated to provide you with extra immune support while sick so your body isn’t having to fight so hard or so long. Each of the included herbs supports your immune system, making this a powerhouse tincture for those times when you get sick.’ Here is a link to the best stuff around and you can use coupon code: CHOOSENATURAL for 10% first time purchase.
